Natalya Romaniw, last season’s acclaimed Mimì (La bohème) at ENO, sings the title role for the first time in London.

She is joined by tenors Dimitri Pittas and Adam Smith who share the role of Pinkerton.

Leading British baritone Olivier Award-nominated Roderick Williams is Sharpless. Mezzo Stephanie Windsor-Lewis returns as Suzuki.

Conducting this revival is ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good stage craft, would be better if there was clearer diction Madam Butterfly was the first opera I ever saw, it made me love opera. I took my sister as her first experience and it had the opposite affect. Although the stage craft and costumes were beautiful, you could barely hear any of the words that were sung by most of the key characters. Comments I heard from those next to me told me it was not my hearing but the actors voices did not carry in this theatre. It was a shame that this performance did not live up to expectations and did not draw my sister into the world of opera as it did for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A superb production A most imaginative production with superb singing and playing from the ENO. Anthony Mingella's production stands the test of time with its superb use of lighting, set and costumes. The brilliant puppetry added a further dimension.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Madam Butterfly could have been better. My friend and I enjoyed Madam Butterfly more for its gorgeous set design and its lighting than for its music. In fact I was disappointed that it wasn't sung in its original Italian (with English subtitles). The voices could have been richer too.
