School of Rock - The Musical
Gillian Lynne Theatre, London
Running Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
The Lesson is in Session: School of Rock Redefines West End Music
It's not always the case that great movies become great stage productions, but School of Rock has managed to make the transition with unrivalled ease. Created by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Glenn Slater and Julian Fellowes, this show takes the 2003 Hollywood production and brings it to life. Injected with the same intensity that Jack Black brought to the silver screen, this musical is an all–out rock fest. With insane guitar solos, rumbling drumbeats and singers that can really wail, School of Rock has the West End rocking on a daily basis. As you follow the unlikely redemption story of Dewey Finn, tales of empowerment, self–discovery and friendship all come to the fore. While the legendary Battle of the Bands may be the focal point, the end prize is far greater.
Why Audiences Rock to the School of Rock
Even before you delve into the staging and styling of this musical, it’s easy to see why box office receipts have topped £108 million ($131 million). With the lead character, Finn, given licence to delight and amuse in equal measure, the show is a riot from start to finish. However, if you ask anyone that graduates from a School of Rock performance, it’s the youngsters that really rock. As much as we’re invited into Finn’s quest to win Battle of the Bands, the kids are all given their time to shine. From Tomika and her amazing pipes on lead vocals to Zack shredding the guitar, you can’t help but be impressed by the talent on stage. School of Rock is a show that takes West End musicals to a new level. Tunes such as ‘You're in the Band’ and ‘Stick It to the Man’ will not only have you tapping your feet but dancing in the aisles. Put simply, if you want to be blown away by some of the most energetic, kick–ass performers in the world, you need to attend School of Rock.
