British new wave jazz-funk and street soul masters Secret Night Gang are back at Brudenell Social Club for the first time in over 2 years for a "DJ Lubi Presents" show. Led by Manchester natives and childhood friends Kemani Anderson (vocals) and Callum Connell (sax), they make uplifting and genre-blending street soul music laced with dynamic melodies and jazz-inflected solos, renewing the musical frontiers of the genres with a contemporary young British sound.

Handpicked in 2021 by legendary broadcaster/DJ/producer/label head Gilles Peterson from Manchester’s vibrant live music scene, the band has been championed by a wide range of tastemakers, including Rolling Stone, Clash Magazine, Jazz FM, Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2), BBC 6 Music and Bandcamp, just to mention a few.

October 2021 saw the release of their first self-titled album "Secret Night Gang" on Brownswood Recordings and a nomination for Breakthrough Act Of The Year 2021 at the annual Jazz FM Awards, as well as a nomination for the Worldwide FM Awards for Track Of The Year.

Selling out shows at Ronnie Scott's and Jazz Café in London and appearing at festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Montreux Jazz (France) and Primavera Sound (Barcelona), they have built a reputation as a must-see live act with memorable performances alongside a collection of today’s leading jazz musicians. In addition to supporting Khruangbin on their UK/EU Tour in 2022, which included a date at London’s Alexandra Palace.

June 2023 brought around the release of their second album on Brownswood called "Belongs on a Place Called Earth", which takes you through a roller coaster of emotions and musical influences, from P.Funk to neo-soul, gospel to jazz. It received rave reviews from Rolling Stone and WordPlay magazine alongside inclusion on Spotify playlists such as New Music Friday Japan, Midnight Chill, Aloe, plus featuring on the cover of Bandcamp's weekly radio show hosted by Aly Gillani.

The release of the new album led the band to appear at festivals/venues such as Love Supreme, Jassmine (Poland), We Out Here, 'Cross The Tracks and Worldwide Festival (France), and they also accompanied US jazz fusion star Cory Wong on his 2023 UK Tour. In 2024, the band are working on their third album and fine tuning songs live at gigs and festivals across the UK and beyond. It's great to have them back at Brudenell Leeds as this was the venue where they played their first ever live show in summer 2021.

“For me it’s an extraordinary level of musical competence at such a young age. It’s incredibly complete music, tight arrangements and with far reaching musical ambition.”
GILLES PETERSON (BBC Radio 6 Music)

Support comes from one of Leeds finest young soul artists to emerge in the last few years....singer/songwriter Mica Sefia.

Liverpool born but now Leeds-based, Mica Sefia started singing in a choir aged 7 before moving onto musical theatre and then at 16, she studied popular music at Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts (6th Form). At 16/17, she was already performing at venues around Liverpool including the legendary Philharmonic Music Room. A few years later, she arrived at Leeds Conservatoire to continue her popular music studies and put a band together to perform her original music (which she started writing at age 16). They soon played at venues across the city doing support slots at Belgrave Music Hall, Hyde Park Book Club and Brudenell Social Club (a memorable support set for UK funk legends The Haggis Horns), and her first headline show at Hifi Club Leeds. She quickly built up a local following for her genre bending sets where neo-soul and alt-rock blend with pop and jazz to form a unique Mica Sefia sound. Asked who her favourite five singers were, Mica often replies with an eclectic list of classic and contemporary soul, pop, rock and folk artists - India Arie, Brittany Howard, Mahalia, Victoria Mo?et, Mary J Blige. Great choices and an indication that Mica's own music can't be pigeonholed into just one genre. In 2022, her profile moved up a level with performances for Sofar Sounds and appearances at Gilles Peterson's We Out Here Festival as well as Live At Leeds Festival. In 2023, she released her debut EP and successfully launched it locally at The Wardrobe with a near sold out show. As well as her own solo career, Mica has collaborated with a host of young talents from Leeds including hip-hop MCs Yusuf Yellow and Graft, alt-soul singer August Charles and alt-pop/soul fusion singer/songwriter Kindelan. It's a year since Misa's last appearance at Brudenell Social Club (a stripped down set for Brudenell Piano Sessions), so it's great to have her back with her full live band.
