What Hides Behind the Phantom's Mask?

The first performance of The Phantom of the Opera was way back in October 1986. The play is based largely around the French novel written by Gaston Leroux. The plotline centres around a stunning soprano called Christine Daae, who is the victim of a love triangle involving Erik, the Phantom of the Opera – a disfigured musical genius – and Viscount Raoul de Chagny.

The Phantom, who lives a shadowy existence beneath the Paris Opera House – shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all – has a love for Christine Daae so strong that even her heart cannot resist!

The Music of the Night Echoes Triumphant

The Phantom of the Opera has long been regarded as one of the world’s most popular musicals. In 1986, the London production scooped the Musical of the Year at the Olivier Awards, followed by the Best Musical award at the 1986 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. London’s production received yet more recognition in 2002 when the Olivier Awards acknowledged the show with the Audience Award for Most Popular Show.

The Phantom of the Opera has also scooped awards worldwide, most notably as part of its New York Broadway production. Andrew Lloyd Webber is also a multi-award winner, winning Outstanding Music and Orchestration awards on Broadway and further afield.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical score for The Phantom of the Opera is also one of the most iconic. It is almost operatic in places whilst maintaining the structure of a musical score throughout. Some of the most popular songs from the production include “The Phantom of the Opera”, “The Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You”.

Love, Lust and Tragedy at the West End

In 2019, Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End’s Haymarket is still the home of The Phantom of the Opera. With a capacity of just over 1,200, the venue retains an intimacy and charm that is perfect for the performance.
