Da Lata (meaning From the Tin in Portuguese) are a Brazilian-influenced British group formed in the early 1990s. The main member of the group is Chris Franck, a multi-instrumentalist and main creative input. Other members have included Liliana Chachian, Oli Savill, and Tristan Banks. Another member, at least when it comes to studio work rather than when live performing, is Patrick Forge. Better known as a DJ who made a name for himself DJing alongside Gilles Peterson at the infamous Dingwalls club in Camden, North London in the early 1980s to mid-1990s, where they would play Jazz, Soul and Jazz fusion music, mixed with a heavy influence of Latin music including many Brazilian music forms like Samba, Batucada, Bossa Nova, et al., which became identified with the term Jazz-dance because many serious dancers who were into, and more especially liked dancing to, Jazz music used to congregate at the Sunday daytime event. A previous incarnation of the group was called Batu.
